Get to Know … Sean Sears

Fourth in a series introducing the new BBFI national officers.

Sean Sears is the 3rd vice president of the BBFI (3rd VP works with the BBFI church planting ministry). Take a few minutes and get to know him a little better.

  1. Where did you grow up? What is your favorite childhood memory?
I grew up in Orlando, waterskiing with my families on most weekends and playing a ton of basketball on a fenced in court behind the church.
  2. When/where did you get saved? When/where did you surrender to ministry?
My dad introduced me to faith in Jesus after a puppet show when I was in the third grade.
It wasn’t until ninth grade, at Camp Chataqua, when I volunteered to be a youth pastor for the rest of my life.
  3. When/where did you go to Bible college? What is your favorite college memory.
I finished undergrad at Baptist Bible College in 1992 and grad school at Colorado Christian University in 2002.

I’ll never forget the pizza fight in the prayer room, on second floor Collins, with Danny Crawford and Daniel “Paco” Garcia.
  4. Prior to your current church, where have you served in ministry? (What role at each place?)
1991-1993, Southside Baptist, Springfield, MO. Bud Everett gave me a chance to try out ministry in his church and I LOVED it.
1993-2001, Westland Baptist, Lakewood, CO. Doing youth ministry at my father’s church will always be one of the greatest highlights of my life. My oldest two kids were born there and many of those students are still in ministry today.
2001-2005, Boston Baptist College, Boston, MA. Dave Melton and the trustees of the college brought me to the Northeast to develop a youth ministry minor, develop student life and recruit students, three of whom have become staff at the church I pastor now.
  5. Where do you currently serve? (How long, ministry roles, etc.)
2005-Present, Grace Church, Avon, MA. We planted Grace out of a Bible study started at the request of my spiritually disconnected neighbors. We have planted five other churches and a sixth one this fall. I’m most grateful for the racial and spiritual diversity of our congregation.
  6. Share about your family?
Billie and I have been married since 1991 and have three kids.
Garrett (b.’95) just graduated Boyce College with a degree in business and works in Arvada, CO. He is a volunteer leader in the student ministry at a church plant in the area.
Lauren (b.’98) is entering her sophomore year of nursing at Cedarville University in Ohio. She is also a student ministry volunteer in the church she attends.
Ryan (b.’03) is a sophomore in high school, a phenomenal soccer mid-fielder, and a phenom Fortnite player.
  7. Where is your favorite place to vacation?
We love anywhere that has a beach.
  8. What are your favorite hobbies?
Spending time on the boat, playing pickup ball, watching my son play soccer, flirting with Billie Jane, and talking shop (church planting)
  9. What is your all-time favorite book (other than the Bible)? Favorite book read within the past year?
A Ready Defense by Josh McDowell was instrumental and the formation of my faith as an adult and permanently bent me toward people outside of faith.
This year … Hero Maker by Dave Ferguson
  10. What has God taught you recently?
“If you want to go fast, go alone. But if you want to go far, go together.” African proverb
