A refreshing spring semester

by Jim Edge

Raised in Springfield, I have been familiar with Baptist Bible College for as long as I can remember. I have always considered BBC a special place. Now, after being on campus for more than two years, it has taken on even greater significance as it offers wonderful opportunities.

First, there is the opportunity to invest my life in our greatest resource — young people. Our students are passionate about the gospel of Christ. At BBC we are not just preparing our students for the future ministry of the gospel, but we challenge them to live out the claims of the gospel now in their dormitories and homes, in their workplaces, and in every social setting. Students often stop by my office to request prayer for a decision, a family crisis, or a special need. I love to pray with students and claim God’s promises together. What a blessing to see them begin to grow in spiritual maturity as their relationship with Christ matures. Because these students are our future, I want them to have a love for the local church and our Fellowship. As they hear from our chapel speakers and inter¬act with professors, pastors, and other leaders, they will form conclusions about our movement, shaping their associations for many years to come. At our college we expect every speaker, professor, and staff member to support the efforts of our Fellowship and its leadership.

Second, I have the privilege of working with some of the finest Christian educators to be found anywhere. These true soldiers of Christ are committed to their profession, and have invested their lives and resources to receive advanced degrees to qualify them to teach in any regionally accredited institution. While many could serve in other places for greater personal reward, they serve at BBC because they believe in our purpose and mission. I am constantly challenged by their love and commitment to our students.

Finally, I have the daily opportunity to interact with BBFI pastors from all over the country. Whether through phone conversations, state fellowship meetings, or in their churches, it is always a privilege to share and listen to their concerns, and to hear of their interest and support for our college. Each month brings new financial partners too. I am thankful the vast majority of our pastors are interested and supportive of what is taking place at our college.

On campus, we have many initiatives in place for the spring semester. Every class is being reviewed and in some cases rewritten to guarantee relevant training for ministry in the 21st century. Our trustees, development office, and staff are preparing to make our May Graduation Fellowship truly historic. We have refreshed our format to enhance our ministry to our preachers for a great 60th Anniversary Celebration. BBFI President Mark Hodges has called on all of our movement to pray and plan for revival, and that will be our theme in May. It will be a meeting you will not want to miss.
