Wisdom on Display

James 3:13, Charles Ray

By Charles Ray, Retired Pastor of Lighthouse Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, TN

Read James 3:13.

James 3:13 teaches us the profound significance of growing in wisdom and how true wisdom can be seen through one’s character. The pursuit of wisdom should be a fundamental aspect of our Christian walk, as it guides our actions and molds our character to align with God’s desires.

The pursuit of wisdom should be a fundamental aspect of our Christian walk, as it guides our actions and molds our character to align with God’s desires.

In today’s world, knowledge is easily accessible and abundant. We can gain information at the touch of a button, but true wisdom is not attained merely by accumulating knowledge. Wisdom is a gift from God that requires diligent seeking and a humble heart.

James encourages us to consider the evidence of wisdom seen through character. He asks, “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom.” Our lives should reflect the wisdom that resides within us. It is not enough to simply know the right things; our character and actions should exemplify godly wisdom.

When we grow in wisdom, we learn to seek God’s guidance in every decision we make. Wisdom enables us to discern between right and wrong, to see beyond the immediate circumstances, and to choose the path that aligns with God’s will. It helps us to act with integrity, treating others with love, patience, and kindness. Wisdom teaches us to be humble, to value others above ourselves, and to use our words in a manner that uplifts and encourages.

The world often measures success by wealth, power, and accomplishments. But wisdom refocuses our definition of success on godliness and character. We can be rich in worldly possessions and still lack wisdom. True wisdom transcends material wealth. It is an inner treasure that guides us in making choices that honor God and bless others.

Growing in wisdom requires a commitment to lifelong learning. We must be willing to continually seek wisdom through prayer, studying God’s Word, and seeking counsel from wise individuals. Wisdom is not a one-time acquisition; it is a daily pursuit. As we seek wisdom, we draw closer to God, becoming more aligned with His heart and purposes for our lives.

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, who is the embodiment of wisdom. As we study His life and teachings, we gain insight into the ways of God. Jesus demonstrated wisdom in His interactions with people, in His humility, and in His submission to the Father’s will. He is the ultimate example of wisdom seen through character.

Today, let us evaluate our lives in light of James 3:13. Are we growing in wisdom? Do our actions and character reflect godly wisdom? May we be intentional in seeking wisdom from above and allowing it to shape us from the inside out. As we grow in wisdom, may others see the fruits of the Spirit displayed in our lives, and may our pursuit of wisdom be a testament to the transforming power of God’s grace.

Reflective Questions:

  1. How does James define wisdom, and why is it important for Christians to pursue it? What are some ways we can distinguish between knowledge and wisdom?
  2. How can you evaluate your own character and actions to determine if they reflect godly wisdom?
  3. In what ways does wisdom enable you to make decisions that align with God’s will and bless others?

Memory Verse:

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. James 3:13

Prayer:

Dear God, I am thankful that Jesus set the example for how I should live in all circumstances. Help me to follow His example and show wisdom in the way that I live. I want to walk in meekness. Will You help me?
