Treasure Hunter

By Tim Adrian, pastor of Westside Baptist Church, Hutchinson, KS

Read Proverbs 2.

My all-time favorite movie is Raiders of the Lost Ark. I love the opening scene where Indiana Jones is in a cave defying death by dodging poison darts, spiders, falling objects, and bottomless pits.  The movie accurately portrays a universal human truth. When the payoff is large enough, people will do just about anything.

The Bible is abundantly clear; wisdom pays a continual dividend with a bonus that blesses us emotionally, physically, financially, and spiritually. It is no wonder God tells us in verse four to “seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures.”

Writing to his son, Solomon urges a fiery passion for wisdom hunting in this chapter. He pushes the reader to seek, search, and cry out for wisdom as if nothing else matters. To know wisdom is to know the heart and ways of God (verse 5). To live with wisdom helps identify, avoid, and refute the destructive traps of the enemy, such as the wicked man (verse 12) and the seductive woman (verse 16).

An entire family of complementary traits is identified in this passage, with each showcasing unique life skills.  Shouldn’t every one of us have a constant need for knowledge, understanding, discernment, justice, equity, and discretion?

Indiana Jones was famous for saying, “This treasure belongs in a museum.” However, wisdom is an exceptional treasure. Coming from the Throne of Heaven, wisdom is a worthless concept until it has been captured and placed in the human heart.

Reflective Questions:

  1. God promised to give wisdom to those that ask Him. What hinders you from diligently asking God regularly for this blessing?
  2. Define the following words… knowledge, understanding, discernment, and equity. How can these unique traits benefit your life?
  3. Some seek after riches or pleasure. Can you honestly say you passionately seek after wisdom?

Memory Verse:

Then you will understand righteousness and justice, equity and every good path. Proverbs 2:9

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for showing me how to identify, avoid, and refute the traps of my enemy. Help me to live each day seeking You and Your blessings on my life.
