Growth doesn’t happen by accident. Whether it’s spiritual growth, leadership growth, or personal development, it always requires intentional effort. Many people want to grow, but they never build a plan for it. They admire growth in others while remaining stagnant themselves.
If you want to grow, there are three things you must have: commitment, a coach, and a course of action.
- Commitment
Nothing grows without commitment. Commitment is what keeps you moving when motivation fades. Every meaningful goal requires consistency over time, and that consistency only comes from a heart that has decided to stay the course.
The Apostle Paul modeled this in Philippians 3:14 when he said, “I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Growth requires pressing forward, even when progress feels slow. You can attend every conference and read every book, but without commitment, growth will always remain a wish rather than a reality.
Commitment means showing up. It means praying when you don’t feel like praying, studying when distractions abound, and serving when no one else notices. God honors those who stay faithful even in the small things.
- A Coach
No one grows alone. Every person who develops in faith or leadership has someone who helps them see what they can’t see themselves. A good coach doesn’t just cheer you on; they challenge you to be better. Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.”
In ministry, this could be a mentor, a seasoned pastor, or even a trusted friend who speaks truth with grace. A coach helps you identify blind spots, encourages accountability, and keeps you focused on your purpose. Without that outside voice, it’s easy to drift or settle for less than what God intends.
If you want to grow, invite feedback. Be teachable. Don’t resist correction. Growth begins when pride ends.
- A Course of Action
Growth needs a plan. Commitment gives direction, a coach gives perspective, but a course of action gives movement. James 1:22 says, “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.” You can’t grow by intention alone. You grow by implementation.
What steps will you take? What habits will you build? What goals will you set and measure? A clear plan turns potential into progress. The Holy Spirit can guide your plan, but you must still act in obedience to what God shows you.
The truth is, growth will never be easy, but it will always be worth it. The person you become tomorrow depends on the decisions you make today.
