I was recently in Nairobi, Kenya, for the S4 Conference hosted by Global Surge at Hope Church Lavington. The name S4 refers to the four key words that define this conference: Speak, Sustain, Scale, and Scope. As I listened to the messages, shared meals with some incredible leaders, and heard stories of what God is doing across Africa and around the world, several biblical truths and practical principles stood out to me.
Even the name of the conference carries a message through the four key words.
Speak
Everything begins with a word. From the opening verses of Scripture, we learn that God spoke the world into existence. Throughout history, His people have been called to do the same. To speak truth, to proclaim the gospel, and to declare His glory among the nations. In ministry, our words matter. They build faith, shape vision, and cast hope into dark places.
To speak is to make the invisible visible. It’s the moment when conviction finds its voice. Pastors speak life into their congregations. Missionaries speak light into spiritual darkness. Parents speak blessings over their children. What we speak reflects what we believe, and when we align our words with God’s truth, we join Him in the work of creation and transformation.
Sustain
Speaking is powerful, but sustaining is essential. It’s one thing to start strong, but another to stay faithful. As has been said often, ministry is not a sprint, it’s a marathon of obedience. The word sustain reminds us that growth requires consistency, and consistency requires grace.
The Apostle Paul wrote, “By the grace of God I am what I am.” Every lasting work of God is sustained by the power of His Spirit, not the effort of human strength. Churches that endure, leaders that thrive, and believers that persevere do so because they learn to draw daily from the sustaining presence of Christ. Sustainability in ministry is not about avoiding exhaustion. It’s about staying connected to the Source of life.
Scale
Once sustainability is in place, it can be scaled. To scale means to multiply what works, to reproduce fruitfulness, and to empower others to do the same. In Acts 6, the early church faced rapid growth that threatened to overwhelm the leaders. Their solution was not to slow down but to structure up. They appointed servant leaders, distributed responsibility, and kept their focus on prayer and the Word.
Healthy ministries scale through shared leadership and strategic systems that allow more people to serve, grow, and give. Scaling is not about numbers, it’s about stewardship. It’s about maximizing influence for the sake of the mission.
Scope
Finally, scope expands our vision beyond the familiar. It asks us to lift our eyes to the fields that are white unto harvest. God never intended for the gospel to stop at Jerusalem, Judea, or Samaria. His scope is global, and His call remains the same … to go into all the world.
The Church’s scope extends as far as its compassion. When we widen our perspective, we begin to see opportunities where others see obstacles. Scope reminds us that God’s Kingdom is bigger than our comfort zones and His mission reaches further than our personal ministries.
Synergize Growth, Expect Impact
When these four words, Speak, Sustain, Scale, and Scope, work together, they create synergy. God takes individual faithfulness and turns it into collective impact. That’s what S4 is about. It’s pastors encouraging pastors, leaders equipping leaders, and churches strengthening churches. It’s the body of Christ moving in rhythm toward a shared mission.
May we continue to speak truth boldly, sustain our ministries faithfully, scale our influence wisely, and expand our scopecourageously expecting God to do what only He can do.
